| Planting Questions |
When is the best time to plant trees?
- Fall and winter are the ideal times as the tree has a chance to start rooting in before spring and summer when it gets hotter. However, all of our trees are either in pots or above ground and can be planted year round if needed.
Which trees have a deep root system and will not bother sidewalks, foundations and septic systems?
- Red Oak, Live Oak, Burr Oak, Cedar Elm, Pines, Pecan, Chinese Pistachio all have a tap root. Many other ornamental trees such as a Flowering Pear, Yaupon Holly, Purple Leaf Plum, Red Haw, Crepe Myrtle, Crabapple, Cherry Laurel, Redbud and Vitex do not have an extensive root system and are also safe. Trees such as a Fruitless Mulberry, Ash, Sycamore, Willows and Cottonless Cottonwood are all great fast growing shade trees, but they do tend to have an invasive, shallow root system. Therefore they can be a problem when planted in town in a yard.

Insect and Disease Control Questions
|
What if I find borers in my trees?
- Treat immediately -- do not wait. Often it takes more than one treatment, so watch carefully. Borers can attack a tree any time of the year. Trees are much more susceptible to borers after a hail due to open wounds. Bayer Tree & Shrub Insect Control. One application protects up to 12 months. No spraying. Mix with water and water in according to label instructions.
The leaves of my tree are brown on the edges. What is wrong?
- Tip burn can mean that the tree has been too dry. It only takes one time and the leaf can dehydrate from the tip inward. This is usually cosmetic damage and can also happen from our hot winds.
All the leaves on my tree are soft and brown, what happened?
- It is possible that your tree is too wet. Check the soil about 6 inches down. If it is wet enough to make a mud ball let it dry out before watering again. This may mean checking every day for a while to determine how your tree is drying out.

Fertilizing Questions
|
How often should I fertilize my trees?
- Trees should be fertilized 3-4 times a year. Sparkman's Tree and Shrub Fertilizer is formulated for the West Texas area to be applied at the following rates: 1" diameter = 1 cup or 1/2 LB; 2" diameter = 2 cups or 1LB; 3" diameter = 3-5 cups or 11/2-3 LBS; 4" diameter = 8 cups or 4 LBS; 5" diameter = 10 cups or 5 LBS; 6" diameter = 12 cups or 6 LBS. A good Tree and Shrub Fertilizer is adequate for fertilizing. Lawn fertilizers may also be used, as long as they are not labeled as a Weed-N-Feed. Fertilizer should be applied at the dripline. That is below the farthest branch all around the tree. Add fertilizer the first of Spring, first of Summer and once during the winter months. Although trees are dormant in the winter months, roots are still growing under the ground. Care should be taken when fertilizing in the late summer. Fertilizing can push new growth on trees that will not mature before a hard freeze. If new growth has not hardened off freeze damage can occur.
What fertilizer would you recommend for trees?
- Sparkman's Tree and Shrub Fertilizer!
